Instruction
All-in is your resource for inclusive design.
Who can use a product? And who will be excluded?
Decisions in the design process determine how inclusive your design will be. all-in supports you in asking the right questions. The set of 66 cards divided into 8 chapters provides inspiration for inclusive design and trains you to think from different perspectives.
Application
all-in supports you in different areas of industrial design studies. Four possible applications are explained below.
Product design
all-in helps you to design inclusively. Depending on the duration of your project, you can play the cards several times. several times: In the concept phase, the cards help you brainstorm ideas. In the elaboration phase, they help you make design decisions. And in the reflection phase, you can use them to review your design. You can go through the cards from 1 to 66 in order. You can also pick cards at random, but make sure you don't forget a card.
- Read the question
- Think about how the question relates to your product?
- Read the information
- Think about the following questions depending on the phase of the project:
-
Concept phase:
- Who am I designing the product for?
- What are the users' needs for the product?
- What criteria can be derived from this for the design of the product?
-
Elaboration:
- How can the product fulfill the set criteria?
- Could the criteria be met?
- What should have been done differently?
-
Reflection:
- What could be implemented inclusively and how?
- Could the criteria be met?
- What should have been done differently?
- Do you still have questions about how to make your product inclusive? Then check out this website here to find organizations and associations that have expertise on specific topics.
Writing a design critique
all-in supports you in writing a design critique. The cards provide you with concrete criteria according to which you can examine the product. In addition to function and aesthetics, you can also assess how inclusive a product's design is.
- Read the question on the card.
- Think about:
- How does the question apply to the product you are examining?
- What is inclusive about the product?
- What is not inclusive?
- How would it need to be designed differently?
Group exercise
Sometimes the needs of different people contradict each other. You can find an example of this on card 7 (serifs).
- Choose a prdoduct. (This can also be a product that you are currently designing).
- Which conflicts of different needs do you find in the product? Use the cards to help you.
- Each person takes the perspective of one of the needs. Discuss: How could the conflict of needs be resolved so that all needs can be addressed as much as possible?
Product analysis
A part of the industrial design study is the product analysis, be it of a coffee machine, inhaler or peeler. Similar to writing a design critique, all-in provides you with criteria in a product analysis that you can use to analyze the product for the aspect of inclusivity.
- Read the question on the card.
- Consider :
- How does the question apply to the product you are analyzing?
- What is inclusive about the product?
- What is not inclusive?
- How would it need to be designed differently?
